You were not careless and you did not give up too early. Every remedy below works on something real. None of them works on the thing that makes the sound.
Nasal strips
Aims at: The outside of your nostrils.
They hold your nostrils open. The sound is made lower down, in your throat, so the strip never reaches it.
Nasal sprays
Aims at: Swelling inside your nose.
They clear a blocked nose. A clear nose still lets your jaw slide back when you fall asleep.
Mouth tape
Aims at: Your lips.
Closed lips do not move your jaw forward. Your tongue still falls back behind them.
Anti-snore pillows
Aims at: The angle of your head.
They tilt your head. You move in your sleep, the tilt goes, and your jaw goes back anyway.
Sleeping on your side
Aims at: Gravity.
It helps a little, until you roll over. You cannot hold a position for seven hours while you are asleep.
Losing weight
Aims at: Tissue around the neck.
It is good for you and it can help. Thin people snore too, because a thin jaw slides back the same way.
Snoring is not a nose problem, a weight problem or a pillow problem. It is a jaw position problem. When you fall asleep, your jaw slides back. Your tongue is attached to your jaw, so it goes back with it. That squashes the space you breathe through. Nothing you put on your nose, in your nose or under your head can pull your jaw forward.

Sleep apnea can cause loud snoring. If you stop breathing at night, see a doctor before you use any device.
Nobody else tells you this part, so people quit on night two and never find out whether it worked.
Night 1
It feels like something is in your mouth
Because something is. The first night is the strangest one. Put it in, turn the light off and let it be odd.
Morning 2
Your mouth settles
You may make more saliva than usual and your jaw may feel tired in the morning. Both settle. Keep going.
Re-moulding in hot water
You find your fit
If it feels loose, refit it in hot water. If your jaw aches, ease the setting back. This is the week where you get it right.
Night 14
You stop noticing it
You may find the mouthpiece easier to wear after the first week. By night 14 it is part of going to bed.
Been using this for about six weeks now. Started at 1mm like the instructions suggested and bumped it up every few nights.

It does not feel overly intrusive while sleeping, and I do not experience noticeable discomfort when I wake up in the morning.

Getting the fit right took me a couple of tries, but once adjusted, it stayed in place better than I expected.
